Materials

  • Craft foam, one 12x18-in. sheet for every 3 children
  • Compact discs (CDs), 2 per child
  • Fishing line, 40-in. per child
  • Sticky back craft jewels, 10–16 per child
  • 15mm sticky back wiggle eyes, 2 per child
  • Rainbow Fish pattern
  • Gallon size zippered baggies, 1 per child

Tools and Basic Supplies

  • Scissors
  • Invisible tape
  • Craft glue

Pre-Prep

  1. Use the rainbow fish pattern to create a template. Then use the template to trace fish and fins onto craft foam for each child. Then cut out the fish and fins, including the center hole.
  2. Cut the fishing line into 40-in. lengths, one per child.
  3. Thread the fishing line through the center hole of each fish and tie the ends together with several knots.
  4. Place foam fish (with threaded fishing line), foam fin, sticky back jewels, and wiggle eyes into zippered baggies for each child.

Class Time Directions

  1. Take the fishing line and pull straight upward from the fish. Then secure the line in place with a small piece of invisible tape near the hole on both sides of the fish.
  2. One at a time, apply craft glue evenly over the label side of each CD and press onto the fish. Be sure the holes line up evenly.
  3. Add the wiggle eyes.
  4. Decorate the CDs with jewels.
  5. Fold or roll the foam fin lengthwise and then gently thread it through the center hole of the fish and adjust as necessary.

Tip Corner

  • Pour craft glue into soufflé cups, for every 2 children, and use craft sticks cut in half to spread it.
  • You can use old CDs since labels are glued label side down.
  • Wiggle eyes and jewels are not recommended for Toddlers. Use stickers instead for this age.
