“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.” (Matthew 6:31–32)
Today’s big question: will our Father provide for us?
Our heavenly Father is the authority in every area of our lives, and He is the Author of creation and salvation. So we should not be surprised when the Lord Jesus says that the Father knows all of our needs. However, sometimes we may wonder whether the Lord will provide for our needs or not.
Because of our sin, there is death and suffering in the world. Although the Father knows all of our physical needs, He also knows all of our spiritual needs—one being the forgiveness of our sins, for which He has already provided through His Son. Also, God will ultimately eliminate death and suffering for those to believe in Christ.
Christians will inevitably experience some trials in life, as Paul told Timothy that “all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution" (2 Timothy 3:12). James instructed believers to “count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience” (James 1:2).
If it were up to us, we would want the trial taken away, but we must remember that we are suffering some of the effects of a cursed world. God has provided for us, but we may not always recognize His provision. The Father knows what we are going through, and He also has perfect knowledge of what we need. (What we think we need is not always what we really need.)
Even though God knows all of our needs, we should remember to ask Him as the Lord says in Matthew 7:11. We should continually pray to God about all that we are going through and asking for His guidance—and make sure we do not take Him for granted.
The Lord Jesus said that He “clothes the grass of the field” and that “not one of [the sparrows] falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will” (Matthew 6:30 and 10:29, respectively). Since the Father considers the grass of the field and small sparrows, then He definitely knows and cares about what we are going through, and will take care of all of our needs.
Today’s big idea: our heavenly Father does provide for us, just not always the way we might think.
What to pray: tell God what you are going through at this point in time, and ask Him for His guidance.
