To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things which angels desire to look into. (1 Peter 1:12)
Today’s big question: how do we spread the gospel?
As believers, one of our primary goals should be to spread the gospel everywhere we go. Jesus said the following to his disciples:
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (Matthew 28:18–20)
This is known as the “Great Commission,” which is one of the final commands Jesus gave to His disciples. A disciple is someone that follows another’s precepts or instructions. In this case, a disciple is a follower of Christ.
In the Greek, “preached the gospel” basically means to bring the good news. As disciples of Christ, we should follow this command of Jesus and spread the good news of Jesus with the goal of making “disciples of all the nations.”
However, we do not need to just rely on ourselves while spreading the gospel. God’s Word states that we are to spread the gospel “by the Holy Spirit”—who dwells within us. The first epistle to the Thessalonians also touches on this subject:
“For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake” (1 Thessalonians 1:5).
The Holy Spirit will help us speak the proper words as we spread the truth of God’s Word (Luke 12:12), but we must focus on prayerfully relying on the Spirit rather than ourselves. God has given us the Spirit “of power and of love and of a sound mind,” and as a result, we should boldly proclaim the message of Jesus Christ (2 Timothy 1:7–8). We do not necessarily need to travel a thousand miles to spread the gospel; we can start right where we are with our family and friends.
Today’s big idea: believers spread the gospel by the Holy Spirit.
What to pray: ask God to help you be a good witness in everything you do.
