For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. (2 Corinthians 10:3–5)
Today’s big question: who are we really fighting?
As we have seen from the time of the early church until now, Christians have had to stand together on many occasions to fight against those who would attempt to corrupt the truth of God’s Word. Yet, even though we have recently studied these attacks in church history, it is important to remember that God has always raised believers to stand firm on His Word—ever since it was first compromised in the Garden of Eden.
In our studies we have also recognized that the attack on the Word of God has never really changed. Since the first occurrence in the Garden, the Genesis 3 attack on God’s Word has been the same approach through the ages. We often miss this truth because the practice of doubting God has become so common.
The Bible reveals where these attacks originate and who perpetrates them—Satan. This battle against God is not something just waged in the desperately wicked heart of every human being (Jeremiah 17:9); it is ultimately a spiritual war. In writing to the Corinthians, Paul reminded his readers that our war is not against flesh and blood, so manmade weapons are of no use since it is a spiritual battle.
The stakes are high and the opponents are furious. Satan has spearheaded an attack against our greatest weapon against him in this spiritual war—the Word of God. As the Holy Spirit opens our eyes to the Word of God and His truth, and as we come to saving faith in Jesus Christ, the strongholds of our own feeble thinking come crashing down in submission to His authority alone.
This is a spiritual war, and the battle for our minds is at the front line. It is Satan’s goal to keep us from seeing the truth, works, and Word of Jesus Christ and His absolute glory.
We cannot fight in our own strength but must walk according to the power of Christ and His Word alone. All else will fail. The Old Testament prophets, the New Testament apostles, and many of the heroes of the faith throughout history understood this truth, and we are indebted to them for their tremendous example.
Today’s big idea: our battle is spiritual in nature, and we fight against the evil one.
What to pray: pray that the Lord will keep you strong in His Word and in the faith.
