For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds. (2 Corinthians 10:4)
Today’s big question: when do we fail to protect the church?
Human weapons cannot fight the kingdom of darkness. They are entirely ineffective, and today’s passage shows that these carnal weapons are of the wrong sort. As we look around the church today, we see many people trying to use human or carnal weapons in this spiritual battle.
Statistical research from George Barna has shown that over 70% of teenagers brought up in Christian homes will walk away from their faith once they leave home. This alarming statistic shows that the power of darkness in this world has an influential pull on our children. In light of our passage, it is surprising how often Christians try to meet this spiritual battle with human weaponry.
Human weapons include things like entertainment, programs, technology, cleverness, ingenuity, eloquence, worldly wisdom, and psychology. If the problem is among the youth, many churches have responded by running more youth programs, focusing on a younger aesthetic look and feel, and having music that reflects the current chart-topping genres. Many churches have changed their approach generally to ensure a more “positive” feel is apparent in their message so the world will not be offended.
However, none of these things are going to win in a spiritual battle. As Paul reminded the Corinthians, our power comes from God. Through a commitment to Christ, prayer, and His Word, we do all things in His strength. Paul also reminded the Colossians of this by telling them, “Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.” (Colossians 1:28–29).
While programs, aesthetics, and even musical genre may be helpful tools, they should be regarded only as tools of expression. The real weaponry is the uncompromised preaching and teaching of the Word of God, and a prayerful reliance on His power as we serve Him in full obedience.
Today’s big idea: I’ll take God’s power over good programs every time.
Today’s prayer: recommit your strategy to be based in God’s Word.
