Dear Madams and Sirs,

I am wondering if our Lord also created money and if yes when? My kids asked me this and I want to give a good answer.

Thanks in advance,

Thank you for contacting Answers in Genesis. Money is a man-made invention, but is not in itself a bad thing. God put man in the garden of Eden to work even before the Fall made tasks difficult (Genesis 3:17–19). Later in Scripture we are commanded to work and provide for our families (2 Thessalonians 3:10, 1 Timothy 5:8).

Money is first clearly mentioned in Genesis 17:12, and is also referred to in Genesis 23:12–16, 33:19 and 42:25 as being used to purchase land and food. It therefore seems that God approved of money as a means to buy goods and services if bartering (trading items) was not possible.

We know that the love of money is a severe sin, and greed is like idolatry (Colossians 3:5; Psalm 10:3; 1 Timothy 6:10). However, there are many people in Scripture who used their wealth to help others or dedicated its use to the Lord (Matthew 2:11; Luke 19:1–9; Philippians 4:10–19). Our attitude toward money should be one of thanksgiving to God for what He provides us and contentment (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18).
