Poll shows 47% creationists

A Gallup poll in the United States claims that almost one in every two people surveyed believes that God created humans in their present form within the past 10,000 years.

The poll was taken between November 21 and 24, 1991.

People were asked which of the three common views they held: man’s creation by God within the past 10,000 years, evolution with God taking part, or evolution in which God took no part.

The most accepted view, by 47 percent of respondents, was that ‘God created man pretty much in his present form at one time within the last 10,000 years.’

A further 40 percent said they thought God had created in the beginning but that man had developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life.

Only 9 percent, fewer than one person in every 10, accepted the commonly taught atheistic view that man had evolved over millions of years with no part taken by God.

The figure of 47 percent is undoubtedly higher than it should be because of the wording of the question. Various other ideas have not been allowed to show up in the results. But the survey did reveal the damage to creationist belief that secular university training can have. While almost one in every two people overall said they held the strictly creationist view, only one in four college graduates still held this view.
