Q:
What’s the significance of the famous White Cliffs of Dover
in England to the debate over creation and evolution?
| Quotable
quote: ‘We
take the side of science in spite of the patent absurdity
of some of its constructs, in spite of its failure
to fulfill many of its extravagant promises of health and
life, in spite of the tolerance of the scientific
community for unsubstantiated just-so stories, because we
have a prior commitment, a commitment to materialism. It
is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow
compel us to accept a material explanation of the phenomenal
world, but, on the contrary, that we are forced by our a
priori adherence to material causes to create an apparatus
of investigation and a set of concepts that produce material
explanations, no matter how counter-intuitive, no matter
how mystifying to the uninitiated. Moreover, that materialism
is an absolute, for we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the
door.’

Lewontin, ‘Billions and billions of demons,’The New York Review, p. 31, 9 January 1997. |
A: The
White Cliffs of Dover hug the coastline of southeastern England.
These cliffs—made primarily of chalk—are eroding at
an alarming rate. While we don’t have an exact idea how much
erosion has occurred at the White Cliffs, we can compare it to what
has happened in other parts of England.
For example, a lighthouse near Eastbourne had to be rescued from
a cliff’s edge. The erosion was more than 70 feet in 165 years,
or about 5 inches per year!
Now how does this relate to Genesis—and evolution? These
rates of erosion contradict the evolutionary belief that landforms
are hundreds of millions of years old. If they were that old, the
White Cliffs of Dover would have been disappeared long ago. Evolution
requires millions of years, but rates of erosion argue against it.
The Bible is correct—our earth is on the order of thousands
of years old, not millions!

Education question:
What’s in a name?
In biblical times a person’s name had deep significance and
was often an expression of his or her origin, character or destiny.
There are many terms for God in the Bible, all having special meaning
or significance. Even the first book, Genesis, uses different terms,
for very good reasons. Find
out why!

Textbook of the month:
Our featured textbook of this month is Body by Design.
Body
by Design defines the basic anatomy and physiology in each
of 11 body systems from a creation viewpoint. Every chapter examines
different organs and structures giving evidence for design. Focus
sections that highlight the interwoven complexity between the body
systems are also included. Students are challenged to think through
the evidence—the facts as we know them today—and to
consider the statistical likelihood of molecules-to-man evolution.
The end result is an effective, interwoven presentation of anatomy,
physiology and creation.

Please pray over the following items during the next two weeks
…
-
There is a buzz in our four Northern Kentucky locations as
we begin planning to move our offices to a new headquarter facility
AiG is building (west of the Cincinnati Airport). This will
place us—in September—right next to the Creation
Museum under construction. Please pray that the offices
will be ready for occupancy by early September.
-
Pray that donations to the museum project will not dip through
the summer.
-
You can view some recent photos of the museum site at www.CreationMuseum.org.
-
Pray that more Christian leaders will read our new Refuting
Compromise book.
See the schedule below, and pray for these Bible-upholding outreaches.
