Q: Most theologians don’t take the book of Genesis as literal history. Why?

Quotable quote:

‘Since Darwin’s death, all has not been rosy in the evolutionary garden. The theories of the Great Bearded One have been hijacked by cranks, politicians, social reformers—and scientists—to support racist and bigoted views. A direct line runs from Darwin, through the founder of the eugenics movement—Darwin's cousin, Francis Galton—to the extermination camps of Nazi Europe.’

– Martin Brookes, ‘Ripe old age,’ New Scientist 161 (2171):41, 1999.

A: There are interesting trends in many books on Genesis from well-known theologians that show us why there’s so much compromise today in the church.

These theologians will admit that if you take Genesis at face value, reading the language in a straightforward way, it teaches Creation in six literal days—only thousands of years ago.

But most of these theologians don’t believe this! They say that even though the Bible says six days, it must mean millions or billions of years—because scientists have shown the earth to be billions of years old.

In other words, the reason they don’t take Genesis literally is because of what the scientists say. These Christian leaders don’t get their ideas of billions of years from the Bible but outside the Bible.

This is really one of the biggest problems with the church today. Congregations across the world have been taught by their leaders to interpret the Bible on the basis of man’s fallible theories! But the Word of God beginning in Genesis is infallible.

Education question:

Were the dragons of China based on real animals?

Of the twelve symbols used in the Chinese lunar calendar cycle, eleven are real animals (pig, rat, rabbit, tiger, etc.), suggesting that the remaining one, the dragon, is equally real. Find out more with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dinosaur?

Textbook of the month:

Our featured textbook of this month is God’s Promise to the Chinese.

This book confirms the idea that the ancient Chinese indeed incorporated an unusual knowledge of sacred history into their written language. Concentrating on the analysis of authenticated ‘oracle bone’ characters, the authors believe this book confirms their proposed ‘hieroglyphic’ interpretation of Chinese characters.

Praise and Prayer

Please pray over the following items during the next few days …

  • That the Answers in Genesis/Gospel Literature Services evangelistic team at the Olympics in Athens will successfully distribute several thousand copies of Answers to the Four Big Questions (in nine languages) and other gospel tracts, and pray for the team members as they share their faith in one-on-one witnessing opportunities with people from all over the world.

  • That AiG’s various relocation teams will be effective as they pack up our four different buildings in Northern Kentucky and move on out to be under one roof next to the museum (starting next week).  Pray that the transition will take place smoothly and without serious incident.

  • That Gary Bates of AiG–Australia, host of the new video Aliens, UFOs and the Bible (and a soon-to-be-released book on the same topic) will have fruitful ministry when he comes to America for a special speaking tour, 29 January–14 February.  Pray that we can find several engagements for him, including in the Los Angeles area. An excellent speaker with lots of great illustrations, Gary also has an excellent ‘relevance’/biblical authority talk, similar to the powerful message given by Ken Ham, Carl Kerby and other AiG speakers. (If you want to host him in Southern California or the southeastern states, contact Steve Fazekas right away at 1-800-350-3232, ext. 438; click here to see the map of his route in the southeast).
