Q: With so many churches around today, why do we hear of a so-called “evangelical crisis”?
“It is apparent that the most straightforward understanding of Genesis, without regard to the hermeneutical considerations suggested by science, is that God created the heavens and the earth in six solar days, that man was created on the sixth day, and that death and chaos entered the world after the fall of Adam and Eve, and that all fossils [sic—creationists would say “most”] were the result of the catastrophic deluge that spared only Noah’s family and the animals therewith.”
– Pun, P.P.T., Journal of the American Scientific Affiliation 39:14, 1987; emphasis added.
A: The answer’s easy—the churches have lost their foundation.
Some churches feel that all they have to do is address the social needs of their people, instead of teaching them theology and what the Bible says. Other churches claim that telling people they’re sinners is harmful because it gives them “a poor self image.” Some churches have shortened sermons and concentrated on dramas in order to entertain people. Other churches make political issues of everything.
And, there are churches today that no longer preach from the Bible because it’s “too old-fashioned” and not “relevant” anymore. Other churches just preach on topics to make people feel good about themselves, not daring to say anything that might make them feel uncomfortable with their lifestyle.
All of these churches have lost sight of the importance of teaching their people what the Bible has to say about our God, our origins, sin and its consequences, and thus the real way to overcome their problems. They fail to teach the foundations that are laid down in the answer book, Genesis, that are a key to understanding the rest of the Bible.
