Q: Bishop Spong has been the most senior Episcopal Bishop in America. What does he believe about evolution?

Creationist Quote of the Week
“I would advise no one to send his child where the Holy Scriptures are not supreme. Every institution that does not unceasingly pursue the study of God’s word becomes corrupt. Because of this we can see what kind of people they become in the universities and what they are like now. Nobody is to blame for this except the pope, the bishops, and the prelates, who are all charged with training young people. The universities only ought to turn out men who are experts in the Holy Scriptures, men who can become bishops and priests, and stand in the front line against heretics, the devil, and all the world. But where do you find that? I greatly fear that the universities, unless they teach the Holy Scriptures diligently and impress them on the young students, are wide gates to hell.”
– Martin Luther, “To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation Concerning the Reform of the Christian Estate, 1520,” trans. Charles M. Jacobs, rev. James Atkinson, The Christian in Society, I (Luther’s Works, ed. James Atkinson, vol. 44), p. 207, 1966. |
A: Bishop Spong is an ardent evolutionist. In his writings he has also rejected the bodily Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Birth. For instance he states, “The virgin birth, understood as literal biology, makes Christ’s divinity, as traditionally understood, impossible … The view of the cross as the sacrifice for the sins of the world is a barbarian idea.”
Why does Bishop Spong reject the basic tenets of the gospel? Actually, his destructive theology is a direct result of believing in evolution. For example, he also states, “The biblical story of the perfect and finished creation from which human beings fell into sin is a pre-Darwinian mythology and post-Darwinian nonsense.”
Spong is consistent. Because he accepts evolution, he realizes he has to reject the Fall and thus the origin of sin. Once someone no longer believes Genesis, then the foundation for all Christian doctrine is gone. Ultimately you’d have to reject the Resurrection and Virgin Birth … just as Spong did.
