Q: What do shock absorbers and bighorn sheep have in common?

A: Have you ever seen nature films of two bighorn rams butting their heads together? The force of the impact is tremendous enough to crush a human skull, and yet the bighorns seem to remain uninjured. How do they keep from crushing each other’s skull or smashing their brains against the front of the skull?

Noncreationist Quote of the Week

“It has become necessary for a new religion, based on man’s natural instincts, to come forth. They have named it. It is called Satanism.”

– Anton Szandor LaVey, The Satanic Bible, HarperCollins, New York, p. 48, 1969.

The answer’s simple. They have built-in shock absorbers in their skulls! Actually, they have a double plate of bone in the front of their skull with a shock-absorbing cushion in-between. As they crash against each other’s horns, the cushioned area between the two bony plates absorbs much of the impact. Some of the bighorn sheep, however, hit with such force that they still can suffer small skull fractures; it’s not uncommon to see one with a bleeding nose after a butting incident.

How many bighorns crushed their skulls and died before they evolved the second layer of bone and the shock-absorbing cushion?

Bighorns are a wonderful testimony of our Designer and Creator.

Correction:

Many thanks to several readers who pointed out an error in the May 28 edition of the Answers Update e-newsletter. Helen Keller was not born blind and deaf but became so at the age of 19 months after a serious illness—a mistake on our part. It shows we are fallible human beings.

Whether or not Keller’s parents gave her limited instruction on a Creator God, there are other examples of an innate knowledge of God in Scripture, from David’s pronouncements in Psalm 22:9–10 to John the Baptist’s leaping in the womb at the presence of his Savior—please see Made in the image of God.

We also know from Scripture that God knows us—even before we are conceived (Ephesians 1:4). And Romans 1:20 holds us accountable for recognizing His existence, saying not just that it is evident but that the “invisible things” are “clearly seen.” Note that a “seeing” person has no advantage here over a blind one.

We apologize for the error and request that, if you sent this information to anyone else, you also forward this correction. Again, we thank our many Berean readers.
