Q: The word “day”—why is only Genesis the problem?

A: The word for “day” is used over 2,000 times in the Old Testament. It can have a variety of meanings, dependent upon context. But, the only place where Christians have a problem agreeing on what the word “day” means is actually in Genesis 1.

Do you ever hear of people not agreeing on what the word “day” means in books like Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Ruth and so on? Of course not! So why is it only such an issue in Genesis 1?

Quote of the Week

“Everybody knows that organisms get better as they evolve. They get more advanced, more modern, and less primitive. And everybody knows, according to Dan McShea (who has written a paper called ‘Complexity and Evolution: What Everybody Knows’), that organisms get more complex as they evolve.

“... The only trouble with what everyone knows, says McShea, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Michigan, is that there is no evidence it’s true.”

– Lori Oliwenstein, Onward and Upward? Discover, p. 22, June 1993.

It’s because many Christians have been indoctrinated to accept the supposed billions of years for the age of the universe. To fit this into Scripture is a problem. The only place they can even try to fit it is in Genesis 1. To do this, they have to reinterpret the obvious meaning of “day.” This in itself should tell you that the motivation for disbelieving literal days is that people want to add man’s theories to the Bible. It’s really that simple.

Read more about why people doubt literal days of creation, what “day” means and the implications of the days of Genesis 1 being millions of years in The necessity for believing in six literal days.
