Dr. Tommy Mitchell

M.D., F.A.C.P.*

Dr. Tommy Mitchell is the latest dynamic lecturer to be added to AiG-USA?s growing speaking staff. AiG is accepting invitations from churches, schools, Bible conference facilities, and other hosts for Dr. Mitchell, who moved to Kentucky to join AiG full time in November 2006. Tommy, a speaker with Answers in Genesis since mid-2005, has spoken to thousands of adults, youth, and children in a variety of settings, clearly communicating reasons to trust the Bible and the Creator Christ who wrote it. He has written articles for AiG?s website and other publications, and he was the featured speaker during Answers in Genesis? relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina, resulting in a Telly award-winning DVD, A God of Suffering?

Dr. Mitchell’s talks include: 1) a well-illustrated “relevance of creation” presentation explaining why the book of Genesis is so important in today’s “culture wars” and for the church, 2) a series of specialized talks addressing tough issues such as why a loving God allows disease, suffering and death, and 3) presentations for both adults and children about Noah’s ark, dinosaurs, the age of the earth, and other interesting subjects about which today’s Christians need to have answers.

As a scientist, physician, and father, Dr. Mitchell has a burden to provide solid answers from the Bible to equip people to stand in the face of personal tragedy and popular evolutionary misinformation. Using communication skills developed over many years of medical practice, he is able to connect with people at all educational levels and unveil the truth that can change their lives.

Dr. Mitchell graduated with a BA with highest honors from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1980, with a major in Cell Biology and a minor in Biochemistry. For his superior scholarship during his undergraduate study, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Society (the oldest and one of the most-respected honor societies in America). Dr. Mitchell subsequently attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, where he received his medical degree in 1984.

Dr. Mitchell completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Affiliated Hospitals in 1987. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. In 1991, he was elected a *Fellow of the American College of Physicians (F.A.C.P.). Tommy had a thriving medical practice in his hometown of Gallatin, Tennessee, for 20 years, but, in late 2006, he withdrew from medical practice to pursue creation ministry full time.

Ken Ham, AiG-USA president, says of Dr. Mitchell: “Dr. Mitchell has been a personal friend of mine for many years now. Not only is he a popular internist among his peers and patients, but he just happens to be an excellent public speaker. Dr. Mitchell has studied the creation message for several years and is extremely knowledgeable about biblical apologetics—he has also been influenced by the many AiG lectures he has heard over the years.”

Ham added: “Dr. Mitchell is greatly burdened to help spread the vital creation/gospel message, and wanted to help AiG because we can’t fulfill all the several hundred speaking requests that pour into AiG each year. Certainly, ‘the harvest is plentiful and the workers are few.’ Tommy wants to contribute to the layman aspect of our speaking outreach, for teens and up, to reach the church—and those outside the church—with the truth of the authority of God’s Word beginning with the book of Genesis … thus affecting souls for eternity.”

Dr. Mitchell was saved at age 17, but soon thereafter went to college where he was under the influence of many professors who promoted evolutionary ideas. He became a theistic evolutionist as he tried to reconcile his new-found faith with the evolutionary worldview set forth in his undergraduate studies and in medical school.

After returning home to begin his new medical practice, Dr. Mitchell, after much reading, became convicted of the errors of the evolutionary philosophies he had been taught. God soon opened his eyes to the truth of the biblical record, and Tommy saw that God’s Word was indeed true from the first verse.

In the mid-1990s, Dr. Mitchell was privileged to meet Ken Ham and became an avid supporter of AiG. In 1999, he served as seminar chairman for an extremely well-attended Answers in Genesis conference (featuring Ken) held in Hendersonville, Tennessee (near Nashville).

Over the years, he has spoken on creation in many churches and venues, including overseas evangelistic mission efforts to Poland, the Ukraine and Jamaica.

Ken Ham concluded: “I unreservedly recommend Dr. Mitchell to you not only as a superb speaker, but as a sincere, dedicated Christian and great family man. He brings a wealth of experience from his medical background that makes each of his talks unique, yet he still gives the basic message of biblical authority, starting in Genesis.”

Dr. Mitchell has been married to his wife Elizabeth (herself a retired obstetrician) for 25 years, and has three daughters. His hobbies include Martin guitars, Gibson mandolins, anything to do with Bill Monroe (the famous bluegrass musician), and large-format black-and-white photography.
