Gospel and Genesis

The first time
the Gospel is preached is in Genesis, as outlined in Genesis 3:15. If
Genesis is just a metaphor, then logically so is the Gospel. It's important
to note that the foundation of the Gospel is dependent upon the events
in Genesis 1-11 being literally true. If there was no literal Fall of
man, then there is no need for a Savior. If death was not the penalty
for sin, then there was no need for Jesus Christ to come and die on a
cross-that would be meaningless.
Paul in Romans and Corinthians makes direct references back to Genesis
when explaining the Gospel message, showing very clearly that he believed
in Genesis as literal history and that this history was foundational to
a correct understanding of the meaning of the Gospel. To put it another
way, the word 'Gospel' means 'good news'-the good news that Jesus Christ
died on a cross and was raised from the dead to save us from our sins.
But you can't understand the good news in the New Testament unless you
also understand the bad news in Genesis. In other words, the bad news
in Genesis is foundational to understanding why we have this good news
in the New Testament. Put another way, how can a person know they need
to be saved if they don't know that they are lost? They can only understand
they are lost if the events of Genesis 1-11 are literal history.
