The Bible and nothing else
This is to re-illustrate the point we’ve been making. If you take the Bible and nothing else, then you could only get the idea of thousands of years for the Earth’s age from what the Bible directly teaches.Also, when taking the Bible as written, it is obvious that death, bloodshed, disease and suffering of animals and man came after sin. However, if one takes the Bible and adds to it dates resulting from man’s fallible dating methods, and therefore has to add millions of years to the Bible—this results in believing there had to be death before sin. It also results in the formation of compromise positions (such as theistic evolution, ‘gap’ theory, progressive creation and other compromise positions).
All these compromise
positions have one thing in common—to somehow try to fit millions
of years into the Bible. This is the important point to emphasize: the
idea of millions of years actually undermines Biblical authority, for
it involves taking the fallible theories of fallible man, based upon fallible
assumptions, and using the results of these theories (e.g. millions of
years) to reinterpret the Bible. This, therefore, undermines the
authority of the Word of God.
