This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
His hand the wonders wrought.

This is the first verse and chorus to the hymn ‘This is my Father's World’—a true classic of the hymns, written to glorify God for His wonderful creation.

Although it is true that all of creation shouts ‘There is a God!’, there is more than beauty and happiness in this world—violence, suffering and death occur all around us.

Just as we know from God's Word that there is no excuse for failing to see God's hand in the beauty of creation (Romans 1:20), we also know from Scripture that this world is under the curse of sin (Genesis 3). Although it was originally ‘very good’ (Genesis 1:31), it is no longer that way. Adam’s disobedience resulted in the death and suffering that touches us all (Romans 5:12). Our sin has marred God's original creation and is the reason for all the ugly and horrible things we experience in this world (Romans 8:22).

The good news is that there is another perfect world to look forward to. An eternity in heaven awaits those who have placed their faith and trust in the saving and complete work of Christ's death and resurrection. In heaven we will be able to sing 'This is my Father’s World' in a way we can only imagine in this fallen world we now live in. What a wondrous hope we have.
