The “meat-eating bull” was named in 1985 by Jose Bonaparte. So far, only one skeleton has been found, yet it was unusually complete for a fossil. Most of the skeleton and some skin impressions were uncovered.

This carnivorous theropod stood between 8–10 feet high, weighed a minimum of 1.5 tons, and reached lengths of 25–30 feet.

The arms of Carnotaurus, sporting four small fingers, don’t seem to have been useful in gripping or slashing and likely were simply used for counterbalance. The large horns above the eyes were likely used for display and recognition among individuals. They may have also been used for fighting and defense.

Some paleontologists believe the Carnotaurus was an incredibly fast sprinter due to its large thigh muscles and slim build. Its speed would allow it to chase down small and nimble prey.

Since its discovery, Carnotaurus has quickly become one of the most popular dinosaurs in the world. In 2000, they were featured in Disney’s Dinosaur as the main villains. However, it was inaccurately portrayed as being as large as, if not larger than, the Tyrannosaurus rex. In reality, the Iguanodons that were smaller than the Carnotaurus in the film were actually larger in real life. It also made an appearance in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, as well as Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous.
