How Can I Learn God’s Word?

on October 23, 2023

Welcome back to the Kids Answers magazine blog, where we answer your big questions about God’s Word and God’s world.

In the July–September 2023 issue of Kids Answers magazine, we learned all about God’s Word, the Bible. One thing we talked about is how the Bible is for everybody. Even though you might not understand everything you read, there is plenty in it for you! God wants you to read his Word because it helps you grow closer to him. Here are some creative ways you can enjoy God’s Word.

  • Read a little bit every day. If books like Leviticus or Ezekiel are too tough for you to understand now, save those portions for when you get older. When you were a baby, you lived on milk and soft foods. But now, you can chew through steak and potatoes. It’s the same with Bible reading. Read the parts you understand for now. In time, you’ll be ready to dig deeper. Don’t be afraid to ask your parents, pastor, or Sunday school teacher to explain something. They won’t mind—even if they need to look it up themselves!
  • Write it down. Keep a notebook to write down verses or ideas from the Bible that mean something special to you.
  • Commit verses to memory. When you find verses that you really like and that will help you honor God, copy them onto index cards or into a notebook. Review them from time to time. Quiz yourself until you can say them without peeking. You can also make up songs to help you remember them. Memorizing Scripture will help you live in a way that pleases God (Psalm 119:11).
  • Practice your verses. Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night or have times when you must wait with nothing to do? Those are excellent times to review your memorized verses in your head. (Don’t worry. If you fall back asleep before you finish a verse, God won’t mind.)
  • Play “Sword Drill.” To play this game, a leader picks a verse and says the reference (like John 3:16). The players sit and hold their Bibles shut. When the leader says, “Go!” the players race to find that verse. The first one to find the verse stands and reads it out loud. The game is fun but also helps you learn where to find books of the Bible!
