What’s up with Watermelon Seeds?

on July 24, 2023

Hi! Welcome back to the Kids Answers magazine blog, where we answer your big questions about God’s Word and God’s world.

What’s your favorite summertime treat? For many people, watermelon is the perfect picnic snack. But some people might be worried about swallowing the seeds hiding in the tasty treat—maybe because they’ve been told that a watermelon will grow in their stomach if they swallow a seed!

No need to worry—this is just a myth. Watermelon seeds are perfectly safe to swallow—just be careful not to choke.

God made watermelon seeds to need three key things to grow: sunlight, water, and soil. Your stomach does contain water, but it’s missing the other two ingredients. Plus, your belly is full of acidic juices that break down your food, making it an unfriendly place for the little black seeds.

If you do swallow a seed, it’ll simply travel through your digestive tract, and your body will get rid of it within a couple of days.

God made all kinds of yummy foods for us to enjoy, including refreshing fruits like watermelon.

Fun and Juicy Facts

  • Each watermelon is more than 90% water.
  • There are over 1,000 varieties of watermelon.
  • Watermelons are actually berries.
  • The heaviest reported watermelon was 350.5 pounds—that’s heavier than most refrigerators!

How to Choose the Perfect Watermelon

When shopping for a watermelon, how do you know which one will be the sweetest and juiciest? Here are a few things to look for.

  • All that sweet juice inside will make the watermelon extra heavy. For a sweeter watermelon, find one that’s a little heavier.
  • The rounder, the better! Round watermelons tend to be sweeter.
  • Gently knock on the watermelon—if it sounds hollow, that means it’s ripe!
