Digging a little deeper …

by Stacia McKeever

12 February 2004

Your journey through the Creation Museum won’t be just another leisurely stroll through dusty halls. The first attraction—a dinosaur dig—will get you thinking about your starting points (see First things first) and how what you believe governs how you interpret virtually everything you see in the world (ultimately one can’t scientifically prove one’s interpretation about the past). But, what, exactly is your starting point?

The second exhibit in this unique museum brings the answer into sharp focus. Guests will be invited to explore the offices of the two paleontologists who were examining the same fossil in the previous exhibit. Displayed prominently in each office are the starting points of the two scientists.

The first scientist accepts that the Bible is the written record of history, told by the only true eyewitness, God. He uses the biblically based ‘7 C’s of history’ to help him understand and interpret what he finds in the field. The other paleontologist believes that man is able to reconstruct the past based on his own investigations and observations, independent of a reliable eyewitness account. He uses evolutionary ideas to help him understand and interpret what he finds in the field.

They both deal with the same facts, but their starting points direct their conclusions. For example, when the first paleontologist uncovered the pile of bones, he knew that the creature lived within the past 6,000 years and died sometime after Adam sinned—most likely during the Flood of Noah, or in a later post-Flood catastrophe. When the second paleontologist uncovered the same pile of bones, he assumed that the creature lived millions of years ago and that it died long before man ever entered the scene—perhaps in a small localized flood or some other cause.

The room will abound with other examples of how the two historical viewpoints affect interpretations of the same facts: natural selection, radiometric dating results, similarities between living things, etc.

The room will also confront guests with the reality that observational science overwhelmingly confirms the starting point of one paleontologist—the one who begins with the Bible. For example, he knows that scientists have found T. rex bones that are not totally fossilized. Cross-sections are like fresh bone and contain what seems to be blood cells and, upon immunological testing, hemoglobin (the red chemical that carries oxygen in the bloodstream of many creatures, including ourselves). If these bones really were millions of years old, then the blood cells and hemoglobin would have totally disintegrated. Also, the bone should not be so fresh looking if it is really millions of years old!

But the question must be asked: why does one scientist reject the Bible as a reliable account of history, denying that it tells the truth about every area it touches on? The next exhibit will explore the problems with the naturalistic view, followed by an exhibit on the history behind this most remarkable of books, with an explaination of why we accept that the Bible is divinely inspired … . Stay tuned!
